Social Justice at Rashi

Recently we were asked to create a video for the Rashi School in Dedham, MA to show at their annual gala, and to demonstrate the social justice curriculum that is the heart and soul of Rashi. While Rashi is a modern, Reform Jewish Day School for grades k-8, it was founded on the belief that Jewish values, at their core, are expressions of fairness, respect, community and social justice in the world.
To be honest, we were not prepared for the outpouring of insight and enthusiasm we found at the school - whether we were interviewing alums, parents, former parents, teachers, administrators or students. Each voice became another shining facet on this gem of progressive, truly spiritual education.
We filmed far too many hours of interviews to include them all in the 7 minute video. We struggled with each edit that determined whose voice was in, and who we had to cut. We were honored to have a Rashi Alum who, while only 16 is an accomplished cellist, score and play the music for the piece.
Last night we watches as several hundred people paid tribute to the honorees,  alumni parent, Nancy Buck and Jim Sebelius for their extensive and ongoing work in social justice. In doing this project we learned quickly that social justice is not what you do, but a deeply held position from which your life flows into the world.
We are thrilled to have had the privilege of working with so many amazing people and are looking forward to ongoing relationships with many of them.
Doing this project certainly has been the highpoint of our season so far. We are proud of the school and the collaborative efforts that were necessary to make this video.
