Stories

We are who we are by the stories we tell: both to others and to ourselves. My thoughts about you are never as real as your experience, in your words, your voice. Personal reflections give dimension to our humanness. Sharing those reflections gives others a window into our world. Everyone's world is filled with stories.
When I was little, encyclopedia were giant, dusty, hard covered books. Now they are neat, online facts of life, but they are still stories that can mesmerize me for hours.
When I co-created GENERATIONS I knew I wanted to record stories. At the time, we were exploring mostly weddings films for people who were likely to be full of ready stories. We used to joke that our clients all had advanced degrees which we discovered (no surprise) typically went together with good story telling ability. Not always, but often.
When we set out to make the Rashi School gala video, we knew that it was going to be a collage of stories.
Teachers, parents, alum and alum parents, students from K-8 all rushed forward to tell their story to the camera. Each story helped define the people and the mission. Every voice added to the symphony. Good stories tell themselves. Good video and film resonate with stories that arouse our curiosity and interest.
I like to think that we, as film makers, are looking for the errant threads of a story that bring all the characters of the story together.
